Computers

What computers will be available and where are they?

At least 15 modern fast workstation computers will be available. At least 7 of these will be linux, the rest WinXP. Participants are invited to bring their own laptops to supplement the desktops we supply. All computers are on the Internet via a good internet connection.

How do I print?

All computers should be set up to print to one of the printers in the Madonna Room by default. There is a printserver at \\printserver which you may print to from your laptop. The IP address of the printers is written on the front of each one.

When may the computers be used?

All the time, except as required by workshops, from the first full day of the meeting (June 3) until the last day (June 13).

May I connect my laptop to the network?

Yes. In addition to password-free wireless access in many common areas, there are also desks with places to plug in and work quietly in several locations (Feynman Room, Madonna Room, Tower Room, Lavatorium) We use DHCP, so in most cases, you just need to plug in and go.

Workshops

There will be 13 different workshops. Each workshop will be offered at least twice. There are 6 timeslots of 2 hours each, possibly 7. Most workshops will be of the "watch the expert" style, thus more demonstrations and conversations than hands on. Most workshop leaders are also providing "do it yourself" handouts, which allow you to do self-paced individual tutorials. Since the workshop leaders are on site, you may contact them for advice if you have questions.

On the first day of the meeting, each workshop leader will give a 5 minute "what you will learn" presentation about their workshop. This should help you decide which workshops to attend. Only "hands on" workshops (crystallization, one of the Proteopedia sessions) require registration. For "watch me", you just show up.

More information is available. Please visit our wiki.

Powerpoint

I am a speaker or workshop leader. What do I need to know?

  • There is a WinXP desktop PC on the podium. A linux desktop on the podium can also be arranged - just ask. You may also use your own laptop.
  • Since this is a "school", we will record your lecture unless you tell us not to. We would appreciate if you would drop off a copy of your slides (as ppt, keynote or pdf) on the podium computer, even if you plan to use your laptop.
  • Please test drive your presentation at least an hour before you speak so we have time to help you if any problems arise. Speakers must have their presentation loaded and ready to go at the start of the session to avoid delays.
  • We have bright green lasers with extra batteries, or use your own.

Virtual Course

This meeting will be run as virtual course. Powerpoints will be put on the web before the meeting, and streaming video of each lecture will be broadcast on the Internet. See here. Speakers: Please drop off your ppt (or PDF of your ppt) on \\sandomenico which is the shared folder of the computer on the podium. Remote participants may put questions to the speaker via a chat room or email. Lectures and Materials will be available on a website and by DVD to those with slow internet connections.

Wireless

Where is the wireless network available?

We are going to try to offer a WiFi network as widely as possible:
  • in San Domenico (lecture hall and break room)
  • in San Rocco court including some bedrooms, breakfast room and hall
  • in San Francesco, including some bedrooms and the lecture hall
If you find a location where the wireless signal is weak, please contact us as we may be able to make adjustments.

Concluding Remarks

Your IT Support team is Gianni Grassi and John Irwin. All problems all the responsibility of John Irwin. We thank Orazio Mistretta for sourcing and configuring the PCs.
